Why isn't my contracting business showing up on Google?
You search your trade in your town and your company is nowhere. Before you pay anyone, here is how to find the real reason in about 15 minutes.
The short answer: it is usually one of three things. Your Google Business Profile is missing or set up wrong, your website does not have real pages for the work and towns you want, or the customer is searching too far from your address. All three can be checked in about 15 minutes, and most can be fixed without paying for ads.
First, are you checking it the right way?
Google changes results based on where the person searching is standing. If you search from your shop, you may look great or terrible, and neither tells you much. Search the way a customer would, from the towns you want work in, with words like "roofer near me" or "kitchen remodeler Bethlehem." Also search your exact company name. If you do not come up for your own name, you have a basic setup problem, and that is good news because it is easy to fix.
The 7 most common reasons
- No verified Google Business Profile. Without one, you cannot show up in the map results at all. Many construction companies never claimed theirs.
- The wrong main category. "Construction company" and "General contractor" are not the same as "Roofing contractor" or "Kitchen remodeler." Your main category decides what you can show up for. Here are the best categories by trade.
- You are too far away. Distance matters a lot in the map results. You will always be strongest near your address, which is why towns further out need their own pages on your website.
- Your website is one page. If "deck building" appears once on your homepage, Google has little reason to show you for it. Each main service needs its own page. So do the towns you want most. Here is why city pages work.
- Google has not found your site. Type site:yourwebsite.com into Google. If nothing comes up, your site is not in Google at all, and no amount of content will matter until that is fixed.
- Too few reviews, or old ones. Compare yourself to the top three. If they have 80 reviews from this year and you have 6 from 2022, there is your gap. Here is how to ask.
- Mismatched business info. A different name, phone, or address on your site, Google, and old directories makes it harder for Google to trust which one is right. Clean those up.
If the problem is specifically the map results, I went deeper in why your profile isn't showing in the local pack.
What about construction companies specifically?
General contractors have a harder version of this. You do a lot of things, so your website says a little about everything and a lot about nothing. Pick the three or four jobs you most want more of, and give each one a page with real project photos, the towns you did them in, and what the job involved. Nobody searches for "construction company" when they want a bathroom done.
Why don't I show up in ChatGPT or Google's AI answers?
The same basics decide most of it. AI tools mostly repeat what they can find on the web, so if your site does not clearly say what you do and where, there is nothing for them to pull from. One thing most people miss: ChatGPT's search leans on Bing, so claim your Bing Places listing too. The rest is covered in why this is just good SEO.
How long does it take to fix?
Profile fixes can show up in days or weeks. Website pages usually take a few months to build up, depending on how crowded your market is. Be skeptical of anyone who gives you an exact date or guarantees a number one spot.

Frequently asked questions
Why isn't my construction business showing up when people search for local contractors?
Usually your Google Business Profile is missing or has the wrong category, your website lacks pages for the specific work and towns, or the customer is searching too far from your address. Check those three first.
Why is my business not showing up in the Google map pack?
The most common reasons are an unverified profile, the wrong main category, distance from the searcher, and fewer or older reviews than the top three. Check from the towns you serve, not from your shop.
How do I check if my website is on Google?
Type site:yourwebsite.com into Google, using your own domain. If no pages come up, Google does not have your site yet, and that needs fixing before anything else.
